Todays Managers
Current IT Managers way of work:
general observations are:
1. Decision making means dont confront the issue unless it is really escalated and and ignore replying to emails until the situation forces action
2. Find a resource and place them - there ends my job
3. Keep giving pipeline gas and survive
4. Thrive on confusion
5. Dont ever talk at 1000 feet on any topic and talk only at 1 Lakh feet with all jargons
6. Be a master of PPT preperation
7. Not considering the pros-cons in a approach but chooses short cut
8. Never answer with a "yes or No" for any question and give a no where certain reply
9. Be there first to take credit for success and Blame it on some poor fellow for failures
and the result is:
1. 90% of the projects are delayed

3. Maintain the situation of Uncertainity

Overall rating - Excellent
01. Beera Beera By Vijay Prakash, A. R. Rahman, Kailash Kher, Aslam Mustafa & Keerthi Sargathia - 5 / 5 - Instantly catchy. sounds like a hero intro song.
02. Behene De By Karthik & Mohammed Irfan 5 /5 - Melody, excellent rendition by karthik. Soft music arrangement is complemented by rockish guitar in the background here and there.
03. Thok De Killi By Sukhwinder Singh & Am'Nico - 4 / 5 - rustic song, energetic track and singing. watch out for the stanza music...both are terrific... phew... Sukhi just walks all over it.
04. Ranjha Ranjha By Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali & Anuradha Sriram - 4 / 5 - Melody, nice lyrics and well sung.
05. Khilli Re By Reena Bhardwaj - 3 / 5 - melody and semi devotional track. First stanza music is damn good with nice work in Tabla. Reena's voice is very soft.
06. Kata Kata By Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi & Kunal Ganjawala - 5/ 5 - rustic song with addictive and majestic or euphoric beats. Lyrical theme is "ek aur gaya"; Ila is just too wonderful. Music arrangement, rhythm management turned out to be amazing.
Expectation must be high when ever Mani, Rahman combo comes up.... cant avoid it, right... But the biggies must have been so used it... so u get another lovely album !!!

Sweat Equity
Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV), Rendezvous Consortium made the stunning bid won the bid for Kochi IPL.The entire is going to be historical soon - Lalit Modi or Shashi Tharoor might lose out their powerful position soon.
But What are the rules for sweat equity?
1. the maximum sweat equity that can be issued in one year is 15 per cent of the capital
2. It can be ssued only at a fair value determined by independent valuation and not free of cost
3. The shares so issued are barred for sale for three years
4. Being unincorporated, the UJV cannot issue equity first, and so there is no question of sweat equity being issued by the UJV
Allotment to Sunanda Pushkar is in exchange for the management services rendered... oh is it so? what are the details of management service ? No explanation so far !!!
So., Whose sweat is this? Whose equity is this?

Short trip to Surat
I finally found some time to visit Surat this saturday. Summary of observation is as follows:
1. Typical indian middle class city
2. Crowded, traffic chaos comes free like any other growing indian city
3. Textile market is quite huge and interesting
4. But you feel let down for being born as a Male - No choices !
5. Bargaining is advised
6. I liked these temples - Ambaji temple, Krishna Mandir
7. The only way to describe the attire of lord krishna - awesome
8. Tasted good food at - Lord's Plaza (buffet breakfast) with superb south indian taste
9. Tasted good food at - one small restaurent at ring road (kuoni academy building)
10. Auto fare is damn cheap...
11. Climate is regular hot - so dress cotton
12. Most of the shooping happens around Surat Station - so plan your hotel alongside
13. Shop keepers are service minded, willing to display as many clothes as you want
14. Carry cash as credit cards are seldom accepted

inflation and salaried class
Salaries class is no longer bothered about rising inflation. They seem to be complaining a bit., but no angst or anger, frustration seen in their mindsets. This is quite significant as the public is surviving with higher inflation for the second consecutive year.
These could be the possible reasons....
1. The salary levels has gone up significantly over the past decade
2. which resulted in increased cash or surplus on hand
3. Increased job opportunity across all sections of society
4. Lower middle class is able to absorb the shock
5. Below poverty line's voice is becoming very feeble in electoral system and worse as the could be involved in "cash for vote" during election time
whereas rise in price of Sugar could impact all the sections of the society. That is why i feel there is no significant push from government to bring the price down barring sugar. Let us see how it is going to be over a period.

Sensex outlook
One year has gone since the world markets made record lows and made "V" shaped recovery against everyone's prediction. Zero interest rates, easy liquidity, lack of other investment options made the stocks to surge over last one year.
What will happen for rest of 2010 ?
As for as Sensex concerned, probability of fall is more visible than considerable rise from current levels of 17k. The best of possibility of 18,500 levels and worst of prediction can be to 14500 for the rest of year. Sensex could top out only after further rise and is unlikely to fall heavily from current levels.
Rising inflation, hardening interest rates, excess capacity of real estate, lack of infrastructure spending could dampen sentiments. Disinvestment could suck further liquidity away from secondary markets to primary markets. So tread cautiously.

Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya - Movie Review
Simple story, few characters to play around, cliched issue of age / religion, nice music, good acting, lively dialogues, impressive costumes are all there in this movie.
Simbu has underplayed himself and impressive. Trisha as usual show cases her versatality. But the big thing in the movie is the portrayal of love, its feelings, and the impact on the characters. Awesome to say the least. Conflict of love and the reaction of the human mind has come out beautifully - in acting and diaglogues.
The big let down for me in the movie was - back ground score., probably too many songs which hamper the flow and above all Aaromale picturisation.
FYI - the movie had sub-title for the dialogues, songs in Pune.

Pune Camp
Pune Camp area is an active commercial locality - malls, shopping, hotels, pubs...and a typical MG Road :)
Locality is quite good, mix of wide and narrow roads.. mix of old and new structures...
Ram Krishna, PUne - Vegetarian restaurent - offers wide variety of indian food... one things stands out missing in the menu is - Thali or buffet lunch or dinner... All ala-carte for some strange reason... food, taste is quite decent... reasonably priced... cuisine is not definitely authentic, sambar is full of sweet, veg biriyani is awefully bad and comes with dark brown color.... But But But the other items like Pulav, Naan, Panner tasted reasonably well. Do visit and eat but choose your menu carefully.
SGS Mall - typical mall, no great shakes.
Kayani Bakery - Lovely, tasty biscuits. Dont even think of missing this place.
East Street Cafe - Nice setup and getup like some European street. Nothing more than that. You order Nachos... some readymade nacho with another readymade butter poured over it... come on guys, just dont take people for granted for Rs.150 !!!
Shoppers Stop - Great place for bird watching... shop at your own will :)
MG Road - little high end shopping, big shops, decent collection of jewellery and textiles.

Laxmi Road., Pune
Laxmi road, Pune offers exciting shopping opportunities for middle class. It offers wide variety of items like Bindi, ear ring, textiles and what not....
Fully crowded streets, best suited for general walking and buying.... Its closed on Mondays... so plan it out folks...
Only issues is finding parking lot. Once you get that, you are on roll... You keep going from one place to another, one shop to another for shopping with ample small hotels to fill in your stomach.
Some clips for you.... To quote some examples... Kala Chappens offers wide variety of Kholapuri chappals, men's shoes, floaters.... Some big bollywood stars like Nana Patekar had bought shoes here... Its run by Amit Sheth, lovely dressed person, offers nice service too. He is saying, they are exporing to USA too !
I found one more interersting brand of men's shirts called Ciera for Rs.425. Lovely colors, combed cotton shirts...

Trip to Konkan coast Dapoli

via Veer (river), Shenale, Ambet, Lonere Phata, Mangaon, Mulshi, Pirangut, Pashan, Pune

Distance covered - 650kms with a hired tavera
Terrain - Mountains and Ghats with very limited plains
Self and couple of friends went around to explore Konkan coast. It turned out to be a memorable experience. The trip started off with drive through lovely Katraj tunnel - nice, wide and long one with good light. The drive in the hills of Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar was relatively peaceful but little strenuous. Mapro gardens was a wonderful place and gave us some relief. Simple garden with eating facilities. Also provides sneak preview of manufacturing facilitues through transparent glass windows. Nicely marketted i should say.
We reached Dapoli around 1:30pm (7hrs of journey) and went to SeaPrincess resort. It was right on the beach, quiet place with basic facilities. The lunch was very decently made and we went out to see Panhale kaji caves where pandavaas supposed to have lived. No proper route guidance was given to us and we took some round about route to reach there by close to 2h and 15m where as the return trip just took one hour or so.
The caves were interesting and were on a riverside. The caves offered glimpse of facilities, worship of lord shiva and was found in 1976. The caves were quite long and going interior and could take more than a day to visit each and every one.
We returned back had dinner and slept. Woke up early morning and went on a ferry ride. The ocean was quiet and the waves were generally subdued. Water color was not green and it was semi green with mixture of black. The ride was peaceful but we could not sight the dolphins. I was very disappointed with that but to my dismay the ferry ride of another batch over the next hour successfully sighted couple of Dolphins.
We had breakfast at Lotus Resort (group of Kamat) and it was a good property and loads of facilities. The buffett breakfast was priced at Rs.100 and had a decent offering of bread, eggs, idly, sambar, pav and misal. We ate and went on ride to Anjarle. It turned out to be one wonderful ride with picturesque locales of ocean, mountain, temples, eagles.
We went from Ganesha temple of Anjarle to Keshav raj temple which was situated in Ashwadbag. The temple was deep inside a forest. So, we had a scenic walk inside the forest for some 45m to reach the temple. One can happily medidate in that forest as there was no disturbance at all. We loved every bit of this visit due to its serene atmosphere.
We came back and had lunch at one of the villager's place. Traditional maharashtrian, konkan lunch cooked with normal vessells without any gas facility. Food was very nice - Rotis, chawl, dal with 3 different curry.
We returned back to Pune in different route which was less of Ghat but it took same time of close to 6-7hours.
Over all rating: Interesting.
Warning: Dont plan your journey time on kilo meters... it takes double the time to travel

Pune - first impression
As you all know that I had moved to Pune for now.I am writing about my first impressions. I am living in a locality called Pimple Saudagar and working out of Hinjewadi phase two. The distance between the places is around 10kms and the established nearest neighbourhood is called Aundh and Baner.
Pimple Saudagar exactly looks like 90s madipakkam or velachery. No great roads, street lights and construction everywhere. But Aundh and Baner has got nice facilities thanks to Balewadi stadium which came couple of years ago.
Pune railway station, Pune Camp, Kalyani Nagar are located some 25Kms away from my place and i am yet to explore them.
For me, it looks like Pune is definitely behind Chennai or Bangalore infrastructure as of now. But lot of construction, road building which is happening now might make the place more comfortable over a period of time.
Traffic - No driving sense at all and people drive at all the places. No right or wrong side as of now. Autos are costly but Tata Aces, Marutis and shared Autos are cheaper than individual autos. Signals are relatively less and traffic moves comfortably as the roads are reasonable broad. Lot of sign boards help you to move around freely.
Will post more info as i keep exploring. so enjoy some photos as of now.

ASAL - Movie Review
Saw my first movie, that too, tamil movie in Pune - that is Asal.... My feedback goes like this:
Story: One big man.. his two sons have hatred against another son... why bcoz of the dad's affair (chinna veedu) logic... they are all in arms dealing biz... they slug it out for 2 hours... Yuhi Sethu fails to provoke any laughter but makes the story move.
Acting: Ajit as usual tries his best to carry the movie on his shoulders.... Sameera and Bhavna are pretty decent. The villains are ok but some how it doesnt settle with you.
Technical: Photography is good and cool. Choreography is really bad. in fact, ajit competes with Bhagyaraj in kuthiraikku song and loses badly. The movie is mounted stylshly...
Music: I liked 2-3 songs when the music released. But in the movie, they are all cut by half.
What i liked: London location, conversation bwn Sameera and Bhavna
Opinion: We know it will be a masala movie., but why cant u make it little better? avoidable movie, over all.
Crowd: I saw it E Square, Pune. Crowd was cool, noisy and celebrating.60% occupancy for the first day, night show.

Rahman wins Grammy
Rahman winning grammy is a such a great feet. Any music lover will realise the value of winning a grammy. Its a pinnacle of music awards and it is a proud moment for all of us.
Its also two to tango. Hopefully, people will keep quite after calling "slumdog millionaire" is not one of the best of Rahman !
I pray to god that Rahman should get good projects in future so as to enable him to demonstrate his versatile music strength.

Mumbai trip
I went to Mumbai, Pune this week after some gap of 3-4 years. Mumbai never fails to surprise me. It brings up something new every time. Just could not figure out how this maximum city survives when a tourist like me bewilders abt the traffic jam on the Bandra flyover.
I drove through Worli Sea Link and felt bit excited. As usual, had bites of street food like vada pav, pani puri and one dish called "bell" - chinese chat item. All were good.
Drove down to Pune through Mumbai - Pune Expressway (done by IRB) in the foggy morning and liked it thoroughly. But the heavy vehicles end up struggling bcoz of hill terrain, curves.
There was a food mall on the way and they were calling "Thoosai" for dosa and "Soombar" for Sambar... had a hearty laugh abt it.
Will write a lot about Pune over next six months for sure...
IPL Vs PAK
IPL chose to omit Pakistan players in the auction. Enough was written by others on this topic and i am late to it.
All I can say, if Indian government wants to hurt Pakistan where it really matters is - then, it could be cricket only !!!
But i would have loved the display of some guts and transparancy instead of blaming each other on this topic.

Chennai will be back to inaction
Chennai is a very different city. Life becomes very interesting starting from Dussera days to Pongal with various activities or festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Music festical, island grounds exhibition spread in between.
You visit so many shops, relatives... plunge deep into carnatic... then relax, take it easy with chennai sangamam folk.
Then, all of a sudden, life turns serious... exams for kids, summer leave...
nothing simply nothing happens and life becomes really predictable for outdoor life especially.
How do you call it... deep slumber? yeap... starting from monday :) Have you felt that way too?

Cell Phone jokes
Nowadays, cell phones are priced like laptops and got lot of features... so, i realised i can make couple of jokes out of it, they are:
1. Feature - 512 MB RAM, 448 MB ROM, Vista... blah blah...
Reaction: wow., thats better the configuration of my desktop provided to me in office :)
2. Feature - 7 mega pixel camera. I can take and publish pictures in facebook.
Q: How do you do it?
A: well, i just bought it. If you give me 3 hours i will learn and tell you :)
3. Feature - email access
Q: So, do you check ur mails thru this?
A: Yes, i do once in a week. coz i receive only junk mails from my friends...
4. Feature - Bluetooth
Q: Can u take me a picture and send to me over bluetooth?
A: as i told you, i am just learning the feature. i will manage to send it in another 30m
after 30m - why are you swetting?
a: i am trying hard to learn the flow and send the picture., dont disturb me, hang on...

Over all Rating - Excellent
01. Omana Penne By Benny Dayal & Kalyani Menon - 4/5 - Lovely melody., soft ballad with interesting interludes. The end shenoy / nadaswaram music has Dilli 6 hang over although.
02. Anbil Avan By Devan Ekambaram & Chinmayi - 4/5 - One unexpected super fast, techno beat duet with in high tempo.... quite catchy. But i feel the the loud music simply drowns the overall feel of the tune.
03. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya By Karthik - 4 /5 - soft, slow melody with broadway / Elton John effect.
04. Hosanna By Vijay Prakash, Suzanne D'Mello & Blaaze - 5/5 - Instantly catchy, addictive fusion / melody with terrific rap interlude by Blazee. The end portion music arrangement is some what similar to Enakku 20 Unakku 18.
05. Kannukkul Kannai By Naresh Iyer - 3/5 - Techno track, nicely sung by Naresh. But somehow lacks soul due to loud beat.
06. Mannipaaya By A. R. Rahman & Shreya Ghoshal - 4 / 5 - Simple melody but could emerge as catchy situational song. Decent lyrics with surprising thirukkural playing in end interlude.
07. Aaoromale By Alphons - 5/5 - complete malayalam lyrics; sung like a Blues school of mood by Alphons. He creates the mood of Blues nicely through his accent. Terrific tune and imagination by Rahman. I dont mind considering some 92 out of 5 for this song (Like Thengaai Srinivasan's thillu mullu score).
I feel Thamarai has let us down on lyrics for this movie when compared to Kakka Kakka or Vaaranam Aayiram. Overal, an excellent album...

02. Kuthiraikku Theriyum By Surmukhi & SreeCharan - 5/5 - Excellent singing by Surmukhi lifts this catchy techno tune to great heights.
03. Tottodaing By Mukesh & Janani - 3/5 - typical item song., decent tune but bad lyrics make you uncomfortable
04. Yengay Yengay By S. P. Bala - 3/5 - Typical tamil thathuva paatu...
05. Yea Dushyantha By Surmukhi & Kumaran - 4/5 - starts with Paartha gn/yababam illayo humming and shifts to Jab we met - Yea ishq kya hai beat... but overall highly impressive catchy remix of 3 different genres.... dont miss this surprise tune....

Chennai Book Fair 2010
Chennai book fair is being held from 31st to 10th Jan, 2010.
Time :
Working Days : 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Holidays : 11:00 am to 8:30 pm
Venue :
St.George Anglo Indian School,(opp to Pachayappan college)
Poonamalee High Road,
Aminjikarai, Chennai - 30.
I went on Jan 2nd and liked it. It was a decent collection of publishers with comfortable facilities. Do make your trip and buy some books. Avoid going in the evenings due to crowd. Go in early to enjoy smoother experience.

All (AAL) is not Well
3 idiots movie stirred the controversy of not crediting Chetal Bhagat adequately.
Background: Vidhu Vinod Chopra bought the film making rights of the book five point someone and made 3 idiots. They had valid contract with Chetan Bhagat and made the movie. The movie became a bit hit. But they chose to credit Chetan Bhagat in the end credits. Chetan objected to it and demanded due credit !
What happened then:
Chopra, Raju Hirani claimed the film is hardly based on their novel and credited the scrip writer Hirani, Abhijat. VVC shouted shut up to the media persons on 2nd Jan and apologies later on 3rd Jan. It turned out to be an shameful and embarrassing video. Even Aamir Khan blasted Chetan Bhagat...
My Opinion
Our movie industry is based on stars and considers everyone else as set property. But Chetan Bhagat is a brand in India and he has got millions of readers behind him. Its it not enough to put a contract and paying money to the author. But putting a title card "Based on the Novel By" does not harm anyone - after all it seldom happens in India when compared to Hollywood.
But discrediting the author and claiming % contribution of the story to the movie is baffling to me. True, scipt writes are imporatna and they work hard to adapt the story to the movie. But crediting the author is totally different and it ought to start happening in India.
I support Chetan Bhagat fully on this episode. I feel the movie makers were arrogant and thought they can fool millions of readers. Its Baffling folks to say the least.
Indian movie industry needs to grow up and adopt hollywood model of movie making based on novel. It cant be star based or production based to claim originality into everything !!!!
