Conversations with Mani Ratnam - my reaction

Bharadwaj Rangan had carried out an enviable job of talking with Mani Ratnam to capture thoughts about film making in the latest book called "Conversations with Mani Ratnam".

I pre-ordered the book through Flipkart and the delivery was received on 20th Oct. I completed reading by yesterday and thought of recording my reactions in this auspicious day of Vijaya Dasami.

First and foremost, the format of the book is interesting and little different. It discusses his movies from the beginning of Pallavi AnuPallavi to Raavanan. Question were asked by Rangan and Mani Sir answers with lot of details, references and the details which goes into film making - Example the pigeons behind Nayakan Kamal.

It also brings out the friendship / relationship of Mani with other well known artists of India like - Ram Gopal Varma or MT Vasudevan Nair.

Overall, it is an excellent attempt and we definitely get insights into film making.

Negative comment or things which could have improved the book:

a. No personal details of Mani Sir is shared. Some two pages of summary could have been added like his favourite movies, or his eating habits or travel places or about how he handles personal vs professional life.

b. Mani Sir has not brought out how his assistant directors or story discussion team adds color or facts into movie script.

Happy reading folks !!!
